Philips DVD727 Review -
Progressive Scan DVD Player
The Philips DVD727
Progressive Scan DVD Player is one of those rare bargains that just
begs to be purchased. At a very reasonable price, the DVD727 combines
outstanding overal video reproduction especially in progressive mode,
region-free decoding (allowing you to watch DVDs purchased outside of
the United States), and a sleek, modern and attractive design. Sound
support is also quite good with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS support, and
both optical and coaxial digital outputs.
The Philips DVD727
is also very flexible supporting DVD+RW, DVD+R, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3-CD
and Picture CD, amongst a few others. The DVD727's only real weakness
is it's small, and somewhat lacking remote control. The DVD727 makes
a perfect entry level DVD player and a great addition to a home theater
system for those on a budget.
Pros:
- Cheap! The Philips
DVD727 is currently sold at an almost unbelievable price for a name
brand (see below)
- High picture quality, especially in progressive scan, for this price
range of DVD players
- Can be easily set up to support region-free decoding allowing playing
of DVDs from Europe, Japan, etc.
- Plays almost all recording formats, including MP3 CDs and DVD+R and
DVD+RW
- Very attractive, modern styling
Cons:
- Short 90-day warranty
- Remote control is best switched out for a universal remote, as it
lacks many feature
