The NEC PlasmaSync 42VP4 Plasma TV offers good overall performance that can be made better through proper set-up of the unit. Pricing on the unit is quite competitive, and picture quality can be amongst the best for non-HDTV sources.

Pros:

- Excellent overall picture, once set-up correctly
- Excellent broadcast, cable, satellite and DVD performance
- Very respectable 4:3 stretch mode, allowing standard definition sources to watched in widescreen with minimal distortion
- Wide range of setting options
- DVI input for future compatibility

Cons:

- Initial shipped unit settings are suboptimal; requires changes right out of the box to reach best picture quality
- Occasional, noticeable dithering issues with darker color tones
- Has been known to run very warm - unit can be hot to the touch after extended viewing periods
